A Cuban Gallery in P-town

On the second day of June, I was celebrating the first day of Pride in (arguably) the gayest town in New England. I fully expected the streets to be flooded with glitter, but all I saw were gym bros gripping their girlfriends’ hands, taking up all of the sidewalk space as they marched two-by-two under rainbow flags.

Where were the homosexuals, you ask?

They were inside the Provincetown Public Library. The building is spectacular, complete with a large-scale replica of a famous schooner, making it the perfect spot for a promenading with all the space and elegance required by the Friends of Dorothy.

During my stroll around the second floor, I looked out one of the windows and spotted Galería Cubana across the street. I had to read the sign twice to make sure. Then, I ran out to Commercial Street and popped inside for a closer look.

In the heart of P-town, on the very tip of Cape Cod, in the farthest place one would ever think to run into a Cuban, a visionary gallerist named Michelle Wojcik planted la Estrella Solitaria. Galería Cubana is solely dedicated to contemporary Cuban art, featuring a comprehensive collection of rarely seen works by emerging artists living in Cuba.

The gallery showcases paintings, prints, and drawings that capture the cultural richness, aesthetic diversity, and political nuances unique to Cuban art. The gallery’s mission is to introduce this distinctive artwork to the United States, support Cuban artists, and strengthen cultural ties between the two nations.

Who knew I would end up celebrating Cuban pride in P-town?
